Sunshine Yellow

This will be going out in the mail to my foster daughter in Bolivia.  She is 10 years old and her favourite colour is yellow, as it represents the warmth of the sun.  I thought I would express the sun image in a different way.  The little folded envelope has another sun tucked inside.  I had fun with collage, gel prints and water soluble crayons on paper.

Rose of Sharon

Seagulls

I took loads of snaps when we were at the beach and decided I wanted to see if I could draw these pests.  They are quite animated birds and I enjoyed trying to draw them in different “poses”.  Sadly, one day a young boy hadn’t been told to be careful and a seagull grabbed his sandwich!!! There was a time when seagulls would fish for their supper but now they are notorious moochers and thieves. I don’t understand why these birds continue to be protected since they are absolutely everywhere.

Indulgence

I purchased an indulgence that arrived in the mail yesterday.  What fun!  You can’t see the mica very well in my photo but in real life the mica is so lovely.

Southampton

We drove to Southampton Ontario this afternoon and while my husband fished at the dock I drew the lighthouse.  I’m enjoying this drawing paper sketchbook  by Handbook; I know it isn’t watercolour paper but when I’m sketching out and about I don’t need expensive paper to document my day.  I. addition, I prefer a portrait orientation sketchbook. It does help me to keep things relatively simple.

Spetresprcts

Our granddaughter got these cool sunglasses for graduating from Grade 4 to 5!!  They certainly are fun and colourful to draw and paint.

Piping Plover

Enjoyed spending time with the family today! Having a delicious beverage right now and finishing up today’s journal page.  It is such a tiny little thing but man can it move when it wants to.  There had been 3 chicks born but all three have been eaten.  Yup, makes it difficult to replenish the breed when there are seagulls nearby!!

Masking Tape Doggie

Fooling around with masking tape (thanks to a tutorial by Carla Sonheim).  I didn’t use the same tape that was recommended but I’m happy with my little puppy!  I like that it is kind of child-like! This isn’t anything like the demonstration but that’s okay it has me written all over it!

Holey moley! We had a tornado stop in the city just to our south.  So far no deaths but 8 have gone to hospital.  Many many homes look like they are uninhabitable.  What devastation!  Our daughter called to make sure we are safe! I’m going to need rubber boots to get to my car. More unbelievable tropical weather up here in the great white north!  Rain rain and more rain!  So weird!

Beach Babe

This morning I tried to follow a tutorial by artist Emma Petitt.  She likes to distort physical proportions so it was fun to have a go.  She used a 24” X 20” canvas or so; I had some difficulty shrinking it down to 4” X 5 ‘ish painting.  I made my base layer too dark but I don’t expect to make a masterpiece.  Another good reason for not adding facial features. Regardless, I spent an enjoyable hour mucking about.

Wasp nest

There is a clear division of labour at our house.  I’m glad it wasn’t my job to get rid of this thing.

Mr and Mrs Peacock

This is how we were kept entertained yesterday. I drew this from my photo I took and painted it up this morning.  I wasn’t able to capture a good shot of the female so I omitted adding her here.  I thought my husband was going a wee bit Sadly they haven’t returned today but I’m sure they are hiding out from the deluge and thunder bangs we’ve had today.  Our furnace came on and the satellite went out! Weird weather continues here in central Ontario.

Historic Day

Yesterday was an historic day.  Mary is from a settlement on Ungava Bay, Quebec.  I use to live in Labrador just southeast of where she grew up.  Her father use to work for the Hudson Bay Store and it was the only place we could shop for essentials.  However, my clothes came from the Eaton’s or Simpson’s catalogue.
I think her beautiful pendant is actually a polar bear, I made it look like a butterfly.

My seeded notebook

This is what happens when there is no plan, just reacting to what is on the page each and every time.  It started with the one line portrait of someone from the internet (that I hated), and two other pieces of paper (a red and black magazine piece and a gel-printed deli paper. So I decided I was done when I put some paint splatters on it.  I used so many different mediums on this page: watercolour, ink, acrylic paint, crayons, soft pastel and watercolour ground through a piece of plastic from a fruit box. Created in my latest handmade sketchbook with hot press and it has taken me several weeks working a bit at a time.

Canada Day

This has been a difficult day for many here in Canada.

It ended up, I had to drop off my husband at the emergency department at the hospital in town. He had dental surgery yesterday and the doctor gave him an antibiotic that brought on an allergic reaction (memories of coma man in February 2020)!  I had the epi-pen ready but I gave him an anti-histamine and his symptoms settled down. He wanted to complete the course of medication but needed a different antibiotic.  So that was the afternoon gone by the time we stopped at the pharmacy for new meds and another Epi-pen.
