Thanks to Judy from Sktchy for the inspirational photo once again.  I've painted her earlier this year and this time I have her kissing 2017 goodbye.  I wanted to upload before we head out to celebrate with friends! It is late afternoon and most of the light is gone!  Happy New Year to everyone here! It has been a very good year and I hope that 2018 will be the same!  Cheers All!!

I drew a fishing boat from a photo I took that I saw in Newfoundland (it might have been at Quidi Vidi Lake - St Johns NFLD) when we were there in 2013.  Our whole family will be heading there this summer for a holiday.  I have been surfing on AirBnb to find suitable accommodation.  We used AirBnB the last time and it was great so giving it a go again.

So... the reason for this quick representation in my sketchbook!  This boat doesn't appear to be used as used as a full fledged "fishing" boat in the business sense but as a recreational boat! However I could be wrong since we were there off season (for tourists and fishing).

Can't wait to see my granddaughter kiss a COD(fish) in order to get "screetched in" - how we become honorary Newfoundlanders or as we would say - Newfies!

I'm still singing "I's the by that builds the boat and I's the by that sails her and I's the by that catches the fish and takes 'em home to 'Lizer!"

It is -17C now and with the windchill -26C going down to -22C overnight (I'm not bothering to check the windchill) so I needed something fun to think about!

This is what I drew yesterday at the restaurant in my small sketchbook.  This couple were sitting at the table beside us! Yes, I was eavesdropping of course!

LDec 24.  Our tradition on Christmas Eve is to watch this movie with the family.

I drew Clarke watch a reel to reel home movies in the attic, a sweet moment in the movie.

Dec25-  our turkey ready for stuffing

A collaboration with my granddaughter who thought that the turkey needed to be decorated with Christmas holly.

Pen and kiddie markers.

I attended a Christmas ornament exchange party the other night with the women from work.  This is the ornament that I ended up bringing home!

The shape is called a bee skep and it is a coiled hive that was used before the modern hives.  The glass ornament symbolizes the diligence and teamwork that are often necessary to achieve life's great rewards.

A friend of mine has made several different rooms and I thought I would give it a go too.  I drew and painted out my plan in my sketchbook then made my room from some canvas paper I had.  I used pen, Copic and Spectrum Noir markers.  Reminiscent of book titled "In Other Rooms, Other Wonders".

I folded up my room and put it away in back of my sketchbook.  I can't wait to see what my granddaughter thinks of it!

Not a lot of time today but snuck this drawing in because it has been awhile since I have done so.  Thanks Rick I love your expression in this one.  I'm reading Stephen King Thd Dark Tower The Gunslinger so when I saw your photo in my queue, I knew it was the right one. First time using new pens Pilot EF clear body and Duke fude nib (nib is quite interesting to try and figure out). Gosh your hat was difficult!! Regardless, I had a good time drawing you.

CThanks to Kirsten for her sweet photo.  I made an art journal page because these are the sweetest little birds at our feeder. I had this blue background and had stuck the single layer of some fancy 3 ply facial tissue in three areas and some washi tape. That was as far as I got.  Now what?.....I left it there and closed the book.  Your photo gave me an idea of how to use the page. I used craft paint, acrylic markers, sequin waste ribbon and ink pad, white gel pen, and a black Uniball.

This is the way it looks here through the eyes of the camera lens!  The lens picks up a lot if purple in the snow! We are forecasted to have snow everyday this week!

I only used the brush to paint the dude of our house.  It's the dude with our Christmas lights.

It is dark now by 1700 hrs and I was home late so it was almost pitch black out.

No prompt- documenting stuff. A glass Christmas ornament that I have to wrap up. Some more snail mail.  Top snowman is made by Heidi from Austria; the bird is from a woman living in Nova Scotia; the square'ish snow man is from a woman who lives in eastern Ontario.  I love these hand made cards.  The bottom one is s purchased one from a friend who owns a vintage VW van and she finished restoring it this summer!

Watercolour in my Fabriano Venezia sketchbook.  I need practice on mixing up a darker dark. I like the grey but I wanted it to be darker.

 had to document them.

On the left Lynn from the USA sent me a machine stitched batik fabric Christmas tree card.  The envelope had this cool pattern on it.

Then I got a fabulous ornament Christmas cards surrounded by bright salsa orange colour from a woman in Germany.

In addition, I got a handmade art card from a woman in Sweden.  She had covered the envie with postage stamps and and a cool airmail stamp! I tried to replicate her aurora borealis as best I could. Totally loved her Star Trek insignia and To Boldly go .... stamp.

I used pen,  ink and gouache.  Also acrylic ink and black India ink for the aurora borealis in my Fabriano Venezia sketchbook.

No prompt - This is how I looked this morning after the night before.  We went to our first Christmas party last night.  No alcohol was involved for me since I was the designated driver.  However, we had such a good time my head didn't hit the pillow until 0300 hrs.  Ugh! I didn't wake up until 11:19 hrs this morning.  I lost the most productive part of my day.

New sketchbook (Fabriano Venezia) means I need to do a new selfie sooner rather than later.  So my brain is still muddied with sleep since the caffeine hasn't hit it yet.....drew myself while looking in the table mirror.  No pencil was used either!!

I added blue and purple not because I have my hair that colour but because ...... I could.  I'm the artist and I can design by page whatever way I want!

We took our granddaughter to mail a very important letter.

Friday, December 1, 2017

Spent a wonderful afternoon at the Royalv Ontario museum in Toronto and saw the Viking exhibit.  I sketched a montage of this and that.  I painted them later while having a refreshing "beverage".

My little granddaughter is marking off a milestone! Lost her first tooth yesterday, and a having a wonderful birthday girl today.  Hmmmm... hoping the tooth fairy leaves her something extra special under her pillow!  I wonder what the value is for the first tooth these days? We will find out when we pick up from school this afternoon!!

Look at what I found at the "bricks and mortar" bookstore in town!!!

Very excited to play this with my granddaughter.  She is a wee bit young for the age group but I figure that she can still play.

Wow! Those cubes were killers! I have to make a point of drawing these over again.

Meet Aoife from Ireland - Drawing #3 and first time with paint in preparation for my final drawing and painting to send my muse her portrait in the mail.

I'm throwing convention out the window and leaving my pencil lines under my watercolour.  I haven't done manny watercolour portraits so I'm happy with this.  Next time I'll add less dark graphite marks.  However, I couldn't seem to lift the paint off my paper with my brush.  I must look for  harder bristled one and see if that works. I'll have to be cognizant of that with the unknown fibre content of the "canvas" that Sktchy sent to me for the Secret Santa exchange.

First time using this sketchbook, a Fabriano Venezia book.  It has 90 lb drawing paper that I like the feel of but with that one exception.  Koi watercolours pocket field sketch box.

L
So it is looking really great out my window this morning, so I'm wishing you all a Happy Fence Post Friday!!!

Most of the farmers around these parts have taken or are in the process of taking their corn off the fields!

Thursday, November 23, 2017

No prompt - I am participating in a Secret Santa exchange with Sktchy and thought to do some preliminary sketches before I actually get my "canvas" out (4x6 heavy card stock) and paint my muse.  She is from from Ireland.

I am very nervous about my painting since I usually don't paint muses with teeth.  I also found that straight hair is more difficult than what I had anticipated.  B pencil and Palamino Blackwing Pearl in my Moleskine sketchbook.

Christmas card repeat.  Ugh! More seepage but this time I can live with it.  Phew! I'm running out of time and want to get them in the mail soon.  I did do the white gouache flick but thought it was a bit anemic so I added the glitter again, it's a Christmas card after all!!

I've discarded the tape I was using and will revert back to my usual medical paper bandage tape.  It seems to get into the crevices of the cold press paper better and works well on hot press as well (after applying it to the back of my hand several times to remove a bit more of the sticky factor that could cause the hot press paper to lift upon removal)!!

Monday, November 20, 2017

Disappointed that I hadn't thought about my layout for this card a bit more! No matter, I've made another Christmas card.

Fabriano Artistico cold press postcard 100% cotton 5X7 with pan watercolours and glitter glue.

I'm not Rudolf and a Peace Parrot

I thought I might be able to draw a Peace Dove but I like drawing anything but a dove.  I have to say I had fun trying to give this parrot a go in my sketchbook.  It is from a phone that I saw on-line.

I seem to be liking the blue and purple mix for Christmas....even if they are actually Christmas colours.  They are perfect for what I am doing here so I'm going to go ahead regardless because I just happen to really like the look.

Thanks to Nelli from Sktchy for the awesome reindeer inspiration for a Christmas card!! I had loads of fun with it! Cheap pan watercolours on Fabriano Artistico cold press postcard 5X7 and some glitter snow.

The Christmas Season begins

We went to town to see the Santa Claus parade with the family.  We had dinner at the Grilled Cheese restaurant (very cute and our supper was delicious) then we watched the "cheesy" parade IN THE RAIN!  I didn't know there was going to be fireworks so that was a great surprise!

Snowman Christmas card

Today's card!

I painted one in my sketchbook not long ago and then created this "Christmas" card from that initial sketch.  Fabriano Artistico cold press postcard 100% cotton.  However, I used cheap pan watercolours but they worked well on the paper. Oh yes, I used some glitter glue for the snow.

I love the Sktchy app and this envelope was inspired by the photo of a woman blowing a huge bubble.  The bubble is a perfect place to put the address.  Not only do I LOVE chicken art; I also LOVE mail art and especially envelope art!

Peace Pigeon

With thanks to Lark from Sktchy, I am participating in a Christmas card exchange and her photo was the perfect inspiration.  This postcard will be going to a woman in Germany.  Fabriano Artistico 100% cotton cold press 5x7, Platinum Carbon desk pen, pan watercolours. Stamps and StazOn ink pad.  Oh yes and a wee bit of glitter.

I'm making envie art for my Christmas cards!

Thanks to Cheyenne over on Sktchy for being the inspiration for my envie for the Christmas postcard of my last post. Cheap matte craft paint and file folder round labels.

Ultramarine blue and Red

I love this muse from Sktchy, Sue always has such interesting photos and I just loved her hat.  I gave it a go even though I didn't make it look like I had hoped.  Still, I made some art today so I am happy.

Santa Baby

Thanks to Jenell from Sktchy for the inspiration photo! I had loads of fun with this page. We woke up to 5 inches of fluffy white snow this morning and temperatures were at -13C!! Brrrrr!  Coincidentally, I had an appointment to get my snow tires on today so drew and painted this while I waited! I'm hearing Leann Rimes singing this song in my head. I used some new watercolour paper sheets for this since it is all I had in my bag! So still making card art in my Moleskine!

A Christmas Doggie and Black&White Photography

Thanks to Chris from Sktchy for the reference photo! I had a bit of fun with George this morning!! Cheap pan watercolours in my Moleskine. Yup, I've got Christmas cards on my mind! #boxer #Christmas

A Basic snowman in my Moleskine

We woke up to 5 inches of snow this morning and -13C so the temperatures make it too cold to pack the snow into a snowman.   I played in my sketchbook and made one with pen and watercolour.

this will be a pro to-type for a Christmas card.

I had to dig these leather gloves out from their summer storage along with a hat and scarf.  These were hard to do as I couldn't get the patten leather to look like it against the soft leather of the palms!  Oh well...I got to use my Opera pink!

Foxy Villians

Thanks to Sktchy for this awesome muse and the sweetest looking "villain"! I feel bad that these beauties are vilified so much!  It could be that where I live we don't have many or maybe because I have never seen them.  What we do have (I've seen them often) are coyotes and/or coy-wolves (boy are they beautiful too!)

Gouache in my on a previously prepared background Moleskine.

Eggs for Breakfast

I'm not going to lie, I love eggs for breakfast and I will have them almost every day.  I used an image transfer that I got off of my gelli-plate when I was trying to seal a postcard that I was mailing out for the fall iHanna swap.  I lifted it off the plate with some artist tissue paper and then glued it on this gelli-printed background.  I have been fooling with the gelli-plate a lot this summer and had lifted off some paint with my Moleskine.   It is a busy page....but it is SO like me!!

Inktober Prompt - Mask

My last Inktober drawing-Phew!!! Thanks to Sktchy muse for the fun photo!  I used Derwent Inktense blocks to add colour for the last day of Inktober. The background stencil created from re-purposing some packaging I received. I used Blue Hawaii StazOn ink pad. #mask #inktober #inktober2017

Cat and Mouse

Thanks Valérie for the fun photo!  These two almost look "friendly" in your photo! I must remind myself that not all things found have been lost! It made me think of Saturday morning cartoons!! Platinum Carbon desk pen and Noodlers Dark Matter ink painted on with a brush.  #found #inktober #inktober2017

Here is my Nelleke Verhoeff inspired illustration.

The drawing is based on the old rhyme:

"There once was a girl who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead,
When she was good she was very very good,
When she was bad, she was horrid".

No clapping.....I've fallen

Thanks to Sktchy for this seriously fun reference. How I love putting serous snd fun words together!! I like how the blue came out on the ceiling and floor when water was added.  I used a #Staedtler "cool roller" pen and brushed on the water. I went in directly with the pen so my drawing is slightly wonky but I'm diggin' it! #fall #inktober #inktober2017
